Springfield Campground; Anderson, SC

This Army Corp of Engineers campground in South Carolina was one of our favorite campgrounds so far. We even ended up extending our stay here before we continued our trek south.

We left Tennessee after a short stay and headed east to Anderson, SC, where we met up with a friend to pick up the custom lithium battery he made for us. Pulling into the campground we were immediately happy with it. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and we had no problems quickly checking in and finding our site. All of the sites were spacious and most were right on the lake (including ours).

Our friend camped next us for the first weekend we were there. He was able to get our battery in and everything hooked up, and re-wired our inverter with better, thicker cables. We shouldn’t have any issues with our power going forward, and so far we’ve been able to go a few days without running our generator when boondocking. The real test of our system will happen when we are back in the desert next spring.

We had initially planned 12 days at Springfield before jumping to a Thousand Trails campground for another three days. However, after checking it out the evening before we ended up cancelling our reservation there and extending our reservation at Springfield. We hopped sites the next day and enjoyed the rest of our time in South Carolina from there.

How to get there

Springfield Campground is located on the east side of Hartwell Lake, west of Anderson, SC. The roads getting there are in good condition and easy to navigate.

Amenities

The campground has 79 campsites with water and electric hookups, a dump station on site, six bathhouses with flush toilets and free showers, a boat ramp and dock, swim beach, three (!) playgrounds, and plenty of parking and trails.

What to do

Fishing is the most popular activity on the lake. Other activities include boating, canoeing, sailing, and swimming, and there are walking trails throughout the campground as well.

Springfield Campground is a seasonal campground. The season runs April 1st through the end of October, and reservations are available on a 6-month rolling basis. When we stayed at the end of September we had no problem extending our reservation, though we were nearing the end of the season there.

We’d definitely stay here again if we end up in the area. The kids loved swimming at the lake, which was warm enough even for being late in the season. We kept plenty busy making and hanging out with new friends while we were there, and we look forward to seeing them again some day.
