Camping Review: Blanding Gravel Pit; Blanding, UT

We finally made it to Utah! Our first stop in this Beautiful state was a fry camping area outside of the city of Blanding.

After leaving the Grand Canyon area we headed north into Utah, our first time visiting the state. Our first stop was a BLM camping area just outside of Blanding, UT. For being a gravel pit is was actually pretty nice and quiet and we enjoyed the few nights we spent there.

How to get there

The Blanding Gravel Pit is located about 5 miles outside of town on State Highway 95. The entrance to the pit is not visible until you are on top of it if you are coming from US Highway 191. From the C-store at the corner of 191 and 95, head 2.5 miles west to a gravel road on the right. It’ll be immediately after a hill on your right side. Drive up this gravel road and enter the gravel pit on your right. There is plenty of space here to distance yourself from other campers.

Amenities

There are no amenities here, it is completely dry camping. For water and RV dump, head into Blanding to the Exxon station right along the highway on your right. If you purchase fuel here you can get the key from the cashiers for the water and get water and dump for free at the RV park next door. If you don’t purchase fuel the price for water and dump was $5 at the time we stopped in April 2021.

What to do

The gravel pit itself has nothing going for it except a free place to park for up to two weeks. However, there are hiking trails in the area and Natural Bridges National Monument is about 45 minutes west.

Overall this was a great stop to camp for a few nights. The cell signal was decent enough on Verizon to get some work done, and we also had an AT&T signal here. Getting water and dumping our grey tanks was easy enough and the gravel pit was nice and quiet. We’d definitely consider staying here again should the need arise.
