Roadschooling has been gaining in popularity in recent years. We’ve taken the plunge to homeschool on the road while we travel full time. But why?
All opinions are my own. I have not received any compensation for my review.
I know for us, roadschooling (aka, homeschooling while traveling) is the best thing we could do for our kids’ education. Here are the 4 main reasons we love teaching our children as we travel.
1. The Once-in-a-Lifetime Experiences
Our kids experience all sorts of new things every week. From exploring the areas they are learning about in history to experiencing different cultures first hand, they have an opportunity to expand their book learning into the real world. They get hands-on experience and first-hand knowledge at museums and zoos, state and national parks, observatories, and more. We visit the ocean, mountains, a rainforest, prairies, and deserts. Things we would never be able to do if we weren’t traveling full time.
2. Flexibility
We don’t have teacher development days, we take vacation whenever it’s needed, and we can accomplish our learning in the evenings or on weekends. We structure our days around our travel schedule and extracurricular activities, choosing to visit the most popular places while all the other kids are in school.
3. We choose what we learn and when
We use Sonlight for all of our homeschooling needs. We love that their History/Bible/Literature cores are based on age ranges and not grade level. We can choose the science, math, and language arts curriculum based on our kids’ skill levels, mixing and matching as we see fit. And Sonlight does all of the work for us, creating schedules for every level and planning our entire year! How easy is that?! We can also tailor our kids’ education to wherever we happen to be. Exploring the east coast? Let’s take a detour through colonial history!
4. Socializing
As homeschoolers, we get this question all the time: But what about socialization?! For us, roadschooling gives our children so many opportunities to socialize with people of all ages from all sorts of backgrounds. They get to see us interacting with other children and adults and learn to take our lead. They are learning proper manners from us, not from their school age peers. And together as a family we have more opportunities to minister to those around us.
