Camping Review: Twelve Mile Dam Fishing Access Site; Miles City, MT

We stayed for a night at Twelve Mile Dam Fishing Access Site on our way across Montana. Here’s a review of our experience.

Twelve Mile Dam Fishing Access Site is managed and maintained by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department. It has several grass and gravel campsites with fire pits and picnic tables, plus a pit toilet and access to the dam and the river.

How to get there

From Miles City, head south on Highway 59 for about twelve miles. Turn left onto Tongue River Rd, then turn right at the second approach (Grenz Dr.; it will look like a driveway). Immediately turn right again and follow the access road to the entrance of the site. You can turn either left or right here to find a campsite. To the left is the dam, to the right is access to the river.

Amenities

This is dry camping only. No water or dump station is available here, nor are there any trash cans. Please pack out what you bring in. There are two pit toilets available, one near the dam and one across the road from the river access. We parked in the site next to the pit toilet across from the river access, and I gotta say it was one of the cleanest pit toilets I’ve ever come across.

What to do

Fishing and camping are the most popular activities here, but you can also drop a kayak or canoe and enjoy the river that way. Waterfowl and upland game bird hunting is also allowed here during the season. Miles City has everything you need, including the big box stores and a dump station at the Cenex station just off the interstate on Highway 59.

We enjoyed our one-night stay here and had a lovely chat with gentleman from Montana Fish and Wildlife when we pulled in. It was quiet and convenient, and we will definitely stay here again if we have the chance.
