Campground Review: Potters Creek Park; Canyon Lake, TX

The Sunday after Christmas we headed south towards San Antonio, Texas to another Army Corps of Engineers campground to spend the New Year holiday with grandparents and to explore the big city.

As I stated in my last post, we don’t spend a whole lot of time in developed campgrounds but we had an opportunity to spend some time in Texas and found Potters Creek Park on Canyon Lake to be the perfect spot to enjoy a week of electric and unlimited water.

About the campground

Potters Creek Park is a 114-site campground on the shore of Canyon Lake about an hour’s drive north of San Antonio, Texas. There are plenty of hiking and walking trails throughout the park and surrounding area, with opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing during the summer as well. The campground is open year-round.

This is not a day-use campground; only campers with reservations were allowed into the park, and reservations must be made ahead of time through recreation.gov.

How to get there

Canyon Lake is about 25 minutes west of I-35 and 15 minutes from US Highway 281. From State Highway 306, head south on Potters Creek Road until you get to the entrance station of the park.

Amenities

All sites in this campground have water and 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups. Every site is spacious with a separate parking pad to park an extra vehicle. There is a dump station on the right side of the road as you head towards the camping areas.

There are five restrooms with showers. They building near us was clean and well maintained, and the showers had plenty of hot water that we took full advantage of.

Propane can be filled at the Tractor Supply north of Bulverde, TX on US Highway 281. We did laundry on New Years Day in San Marcos, TX, but there are closer laundromats in Canyon Lake that were not open that day.

What to do

We took a walk through the campground nearly every day. The roads were in good condition and we enjoyed walking around the camping loops and down to the lake shore. We also saw several deer run through the campground and birds would sing every morning.

During the peak summer season there is plenty to do here, including fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, wildlife viewing, and biking.

We spent most of our days in San Antonio where we visited The Alamo, The Riverwalk, and the San Antonio Aquarium. Unfortunately we were not impressed with any of these and most likely will not return unless we need to be in the area.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Potters Creek Park. The other campers were quiet (except for New Years Eve), we couldn’t hear any traffic, and we loved being in the trees. If we need to be in the area in the future we’ll definitely consider staying here.
