We had to spend a few days in our home state’s capital city to finish up our final appointments for the year and took the opportunity to stay at General Sibley Park on the south end of Bismarck. Here’s what we thought of our stay.
General Sibley Park is a beautiful city park at the south end of Washington Street, run and maintained by Bismarck Parks and Recreation. The park and campground opened May 27th, 1967 and features 113 RV sites, two shower houses, two playgrounds, two picnic shelters, a 24-hole disc golf course, and a boat ramp with access to the Missouri River, all covering 138 acres.
How to get there
If you are heading east on I-94, take the first exit into Bismarck and follow it around the Bismarck Expressway to S Washington Street. Turn right onto S Washington Street and follow it all the way to the south. General Sibley will be on the left at the end of the pavement.
If you are heading west on I-94, take the first exit into Bismarck and follow the Bismarck Expressway around the south end of Bismarck until you get to Airport Rd. Turn left on Airport Rd and follow it to the end. Turn right onto University Dr, then turn left onto S 12th St. Follow S 12th St to E Burleigh Ave, turn right, follow it to S Washington St., then turn left. Follow S Washington St. to the end of the pavement. Alternatively, you can follow Bismarck Expressway to S Washington St., turn left and follow S Washington St. to the end of the pavement. If you are towing a trailer or wish to avoid driving through town, though, the first option will be your best route.
Amenities
All RV sites have electric (most are 30 amp with some 50 amp). There are two water spigots near the entrance, one on your way into the park and the other next to the dump station. There are two bathhouses with plenty of hot water (we checked!) and a couple pit toilets.
What to do
Our kids loved playing at the two playgrounds, and there was also the option of the 24-hole disc golf course and a hiking trail. Bismarck itself hosts a zoo, plenty of city parks, shopping, great restaurant options, and more.
Bismarck had a cold snap during our stay (we woke up to 28 degrees F. the second morning!) but that didn’t stop us from enjoying General Sibley Park and the surrounding area. We highly recommend staying here if you are in the area.
