The first of June marks the end of our first year of living and traveling in our fifth wheel RV. Today, the two older kids talk about the good and the bad of RV living.
When we began our RV adventures one year ago we had no idea what to expect. Would we like it? Would we have trouble finding reliable cell phone signals? How would the kids adjust to living in a much smaller space? We know that other families are thinking about making the move we made, so I sat down with our kids (separately) to ask them what they think about the past year.
What is your favorite part about living in an RV?
Mr. C (13yo): Seeing new places. When you live in a house you don’t get to do that very often and when you do it costs a lot of money for airplanes and stuff.
Miss C (6yo): I like seeing new places.
What is your least favorite part about living in an RV?
Mr. C: It’s small, so you have to be outside a lot.
What do you miss, if anything, about living in a house?
Mr. C: Internet. Living close to friends.
Miss C: All the space.
What is your favorite place we have visited so far?
Mr. C: Las Vegas, Nevada.
Miss C: Valley of Fire State Park.
Is there somewhere we haven’t been yet that you would really like to see?
Mr. C: The geysers in Yellowstone.
Miss C: All of the parks!
Are there any changes you’d like us to make for this next year?
Miss C: I would like to go more places more often.
Is RV living what you expected? How is it different?
Mr. C: Not really. I expected us to be in parks more often but that’s not the case.
Miss C: There’s less space than in a house.
What is easy or difficult to adjust to living in an RV?
Mr. C: It was hard. I had so much stuff to clean out and it wasn’t fun.
Miss C: It was easy. I really didn’t do much with the moving. All I have to do is play with my sister and do school work.
What is your favorite part about homeschooling on the road?
Mr. C: We can take days off whenever we need to. In school you can only be out if you are sick.
What has been your favorite National Park or Monument so far?
Mr. C: Olympic National Park.
Miss C: Devils Tower National Monument.
Prior to the move, Mr. C was attending a local public school. The move to homeschooling was quite a change for him but he adjusted well and loves it. He just turned 13 so we will see what it is like having a teenager while RVing the States.
Miss C was really excited to begin homeschooling and is doing excellent with our chosen curriculum, Sonlight. She also loves to be outside and enjoys all the traveling we’ve been doing and making friends along the way.
Our youngest, Miss V, was only 18 months old when we moved into the RV. Before the move she had already transitioned to sleeping in a room with her sister, so moving into the RV to share a room with her siblings was easy and painless. She loves all the exploring we do but not all the driving.
I love that we get to go on this journey with our kids. It has opened up so many new experiences for them and I can’t wait to watch them experience more in the year ahead.
